What is an isotonic drink ?

A drink is said to be isotonic when its density is close to blood's one. This property makes it possible to optimize the absorption of the components in the intestine.
Particular attention should be paid to preparation in hot weather; it's indeed advisable to dilute it with a little more water when the temperatures rise.

Test condition

During the preparation of Albi marathon, I tested the drink on my long runs. 4 sessions of 1 hour 45 minutes, 2 hours, 2 hours 20 minutes and 2 hours 15 minutes. I started each of these sessions with 650ml of prepared drink.

During the first long run I took a sip every km, on the second, every 2 km, on the third, every 3 km and on the fourth, I did it as I wanted.
I only tasted the lemon taste.

My review

I have rarely used exercise drink, just water, even on the marathons I have done.
The very attractive price of the Aptonia drink finished convincing me to try it.
I am not disappointed, I felt a real contribution during long runs, I felt less tired during and especially after the effort.
On my first run, with a sip every kilometer, I thought it was too much. It quickly nauseated me and I had stomach discomfort.
For the second and third runs, with a sip every 2 or 3 kilometers, I really appreciated. No sickness, no discomfort. I really had good and pleasant feelings.
For the fourth run, I drank whenever I felt the need, I felt the same benefits as on the 2 previous 2 runs.

However, I still advise that you have to drink regularly every 2 or 3 km, or every 10 minutes for example. This will keep you away from forgetting and getting dehydrated.

Note that there are several formats :

- the 650g standard which makes possible to reconstitute seventeen 500ml cans of drink.
- the 2kg economic format which makes possible to reconstitute fifty-two 500ml cans of drink.
- the unit, much less economical, 38g which makes possible to reconstitute one 500ml can of drink.

Conclusion

A really pleasant drink, which allows you to maintain your effort in good conditions. It's relatively well proportioned with almost all the necessary elements for endurance sports. I think it can also bring more during Interval training. I invite you to read a comparison of energy drinks on website of dietitian Nicolas Aubineau (in French).
